How we work
We verify the binomial, not the market name.
Common names travel badly. A single market name can cover different species from different continents, and that difference is invisible on an invoice but obvious on a label — if anyone bothers to read it.
So we read the label. Every lot is checked against its stated Latin binomial and country of origin before it moves anywhere, and both are recorded against the lot.
A lot sold to us under the market name Irish Moss carried the binomial Chondracanthus chamissoi, harvested in Peru — a Pacific red alga, not the North Atlantic Chondrus crispus that the name implies.
Both are legitimate seaweeds, honestly labelled by a careful supplier. They are not the same organism, and only one of them is what a buyer assumes they are getting.
